The Swiss stone was presented by Charles Bucher, President of the Swiss Australian Society on 2nd of August 1985 at a reception to celebrate the Swiss National Day which commemorates the foundation of the Swiss Confederation on 1st August 1291. The polished granite stone came from the Gotthard mountain, right in the centre of Switzerland. The engraved design was created and carved by Gottlieb (Godi) Farner. It features the Swiss white cross national emblem in the centre, this is surrounded by the inscription in English and repeated in Schweizer-deutch, French, Italian and Romansch, the four official languages of Switzerland.
